OSLO Group Announces "Open Learning Support"
Posted on Apr 19, 2004 at 12:00AM

Logan, UT (April 19, 2004) -- The Open Sustainable Learning Opportunity (OSLO) Group announced today that Utah State University has partnered with MIT to provide free human support for self-learners and others taking advantage of OpenCourseWare materials at MIT.

In April of 2001, MIT President, Charles M. Vest, announced that MIT would make the materials for nearly all its courses freely available on the Internet over the next ten years through its OpenCourseWare (OCW) project.

OSLO Group Director, David Wiley, announced today the pilot launch of 'Open Learning Support' (OLS), social software integrated with OCW materials that will allow learners to connect with each other, form study groups, and receive support for using OCW materials in formal and informal educational settings. OLS supports USU's mission by engaging the public, cultivating diversity of thought and culture, and supporting learning.

Open Learning Support:

  • Is a space where individuals can connect to share, discuss, ask, answer, debate, collaborate, teach, and learn
  • Is not a degree-granting or certificate-granting program
  • Does not provide formal access to university faculty

OLS currently serves seven courses from MIT's OpenCourseWare initiative. OLS will be integrated with additional courses from MIT/OCW and educational materials from other collections over time.

Open Learning Support is funded by a grant from The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation.

OLS & WAOE Mentoring Initiative
On Oct 28, 2004 at 07:48AMNickBowskill wrote: Hi,
I was reading and listening to Paul Stacey's audio blog on LearningTimes around the concept of 'Open Learning Support.' As i understand it, the basic idea is to construct distributed support for MIT open courseware materials thereby giving access to *multiple* tutors.

I wanted to draw some attention to this in relation to the mentoring support initiative i'm chairing with a voluntary community known as WAOE. Our idea *there* is to have that same distributed support system but rather than centering it around online courseware it focusses instead upon the projects brought by members. The whole thing is run by and for volunteers.

The Open Learning Support is seen as a major innovation and I believe it is. In some respects our WAOE model is but a variant of that. However, I believe that our model may also have rather unique perspectives in the way the support is constructed into what are temporary teams and the individualised nature of the support for proponents and the informal learning projects. In addition, I believe that being focussed on real learning projects and real needs brought to our community it is in some respects more authentic learning. Both initiatives recognise and value and even foreground the social aspects of learning.

I'd be interested to hear any comments on any of this and we do of course welcome project proposals (application forms available by sending a blank email to formplease@canoemail.com ; archive of pilot available at http://waoe.org/mentor). Just some thoughts I wanted to share and perhaps discuss.

I do congratulate you on what seems like a very stimulating initiative and look forward to hearing more in due course. I just wanted to alert you to other related voluntary developments.

Cheers,
Nick

Word!

I was thinking of setting up my own Forum to support the Courses I am considering doing, so for a UNIVERSITY to do it is even better; with all the implications for Research on the University side, and stimulating peer led interactions at Forum end.
As for Mentoring Initiative this is yet another dimension to the radical self-learning process over undergraduate material (whoever and whatever type of person is 'in situ').
So let there be MORE!! Let 000's of MIT OCW Self Learners congregate and unite over the delicous opportunity of learning(together) the wonderful Courses emanating out of MIT OCW.

Thank you
